Making the move from Calgary to acreage living is exciting. The utilities side of it doesn’t have to be intimidating — it’s just different from what you’re used to. Here’s what you’ll actually encounter.
Natural Gas
Available in some areas, particularly closer to larger service corridors. When a property has it, it operates identically to city gas — same furnace, same experience. Confirm availability early, especially if you’re planning a shop or additional building.
Propane
The most common heating fuel on acreages in this region. A tank sits on your property and gets filled by a delivery truck on a schedule you manage. Your furnace runs exactly like a gas furnace — the fuel source is just stored on your land instead of coming through a municipal line. You can monitor levels, schedule fills, and lock in rates.
Insulation quality matters more than fuel type. A well-built, well-sealed home runs efficiently on propane. Keep that in mind when you’re evaluating properties.
Wood Heat
Many acreages have a wood stove alongside the primary furnace. If the power goes out, a wood stove keeps running. It also reduces propane consumption during colder months. If a property has one, it will need a WETT inspection — that’s a requirement for insurance but is easily arranged.
Well Water
A drilled well with a pump and pressure tank delivers water the same way city water does — day to day you won’t notice much difference. Most wells in this region are reliable. Drilling records and a proper inspection before you buy are standard practice and worth doing.
Acreage utilities are independent systems rather than municipal ones. Once you understand what’s on a property and how it works, most people find it becomes one of the things they appreciate most about rural living.
